What’s Going On at Behnke Nurseries:

The PAinT Show continues at Potomac. Part of our garden center has been converted to an art gallery to exhibit works by local painters who are members of Potomac Artists in Touch. Paintings are for sale by the artists, and 10% of the proceeds go the Prevention of Blindness Society for Metropolitan Washington.

At Beltsville, our Saturday Lecture Series Continues:

On Saturday February 2 at 1:00 we take a look at landscaping your yard:

“Right Plant, Right Place: Landscape Solutions”

Bill Mann, Manager, Behnke Nurseries Landscape

From pre-plant planning to the critical after-planting care, this will be a lively and enlightening presentation.  The lecture will be followed by a question and answer period to help you with any specific landscape project and to answer any plant questions you might have.

And peeking ahead a bit, on February 9th Wildlife Ecologist Rob Gibbs will talk about outwitting or tolerating Deer. This meeting will be hosted by the National Capital Daylily Society. More info next week!

All lectures are free, but if you call to register, it helps us plan handouts and so on: call 301-937-1100 between 9AM and 4:30PM any day.

With a lecture scheduled at 1:00 every Saturday, there is bound to be a topic of interest to you.

Behnkes Lecture Series Continues – 2008

Posted January 21st, 2008. Filed under Seminars

Hello to All of Our Gardening Friends

The Greenhouse Effect. It’s not always a bad thing-if you are actually in a greenhouse in the winter, it can be downright pleasant. The sun shines, heat is trapped in the greenhouse, and it can be practically balmy inside, even when it’s cold outside. That’s why we are featuring our houseplants this month; shopping for foliage and blooming plants in a real greenhouse this time of the year can jumpstart your endorphins and reduce the winter-is-here, short-day blues.

If satisfying your senses isn’t enough incentive, then see the attached ad for additional financial incentives to stop by and adopt a houseplant.

Our Lecture Series Continues:

These talks will be given at 1:00 Saturday, at our Beltsville garden center. The lectures are free: we’d like you to call and register so that we can better judge how many handouts to prepare.  301-937-1100

Saturday, January 26:

Gary Ingram, manager of merchandising for Behnke Nurseries, presents………….

Terrarium Demonstration: Houseplants in Glass

A container garden in glass? Gary will construct a “world in a bottle”, showing the proper materials plants and techniques to produce a terrarium with drama. A drawing will be held for the demo terrarium.

Coming Up:

A special Sunday lecture has been added.  Legendary Virginia nurseryman and radio personality Andre Viette will appear at 1:00 on Sunday, March 30, 2008. More details forthcoming.

Announcing Behnke Nurseries Speakers Series

Beginning January 12, 2008, Behnke Nurseries at Beltsville will again be featuring fine speakers from the gardening community as well as notable members of our own staff. Speakers will include Fran West on pruning, Dr. Richard Bitner on conifers, Britt Slattery on the Audubon Back Yard Program, David Culp on perennials, and many others.

The talks will be held each Saturday at 1 pm at Behnke’s Beltsville Garden Center. We will present one speaker per weekend, and conduct the talks year round. That way, you will know there is always someone to see at Behnke Nurseries.

You may want to pick up printed schedules in each of our garden centers, and we will send periodic announcements to our email list. (Email us at behnkes@behnkes.net to join our email list.)

As in the past, many presentations will be free. Pre-registration is requested so that we can have enough seats available and provide handouts. Details on registration are listed here.

Hope to see you here!
