Carol Allen has this answer for Trish (and I've added it to the text of the To-Do List, too)

Hi Trish

The best time to move bulbs of any kind is when the foliage has yellowed and the plant is going dormant. Make sure their new home has well prepared soil to welcome them!

I have some poorly placed tulips that just poked their heads up. I did not mark their location and "lost" them last year, so this year I plan to move them. But I am afraid of "losing" them again! Is it ok to move them in late spring after the foliage has died off, or must I wait until fall?

I live in Greenbelt too. Every year is a constant battle with one neighbor's vinca and the other neighbor's English Ivy, creeping through the chainlink fence. I have fears of the english ivy destroying my shady wildflower garden one day. Its a constant battle... I wish it were illegal to sell those two plants. Most of the woods around here have it now.

I agree though, the first thing to do is get all the hardscaping done. Then trees and shrubs...then perennials and annuals.

We just bought a house and it has a few very overgrown boxwoods. I'd love to do something 'fun' with them and I'd love to win this book. Thanks.

If you're interested in topiary gardens, you should visit the Ladew Topiary gardens in Monkton, MD (near Baltimore).

Also, there's a miniconference sponsored by the Montgomery County Master Gardeners on Feb. 25 which will include among its talks a presentation on pruning. You must register in advance--see the MCMG website for details.

I moved in with my now ex-husband, the house boxwoods were in bad shape. They had been hacked & were lacking volume. After a year of fertilizer & aggressive trimmings the neighbors would stop by & comment about how great they looked. A few had made the comment when I started that they would just rip them out. One of the biggest problems was the competition of the boxwoods with grass.
