Failure with plants happens with the "pros" as well. I recall one of my co-horts, an avid gardener, saying he'll give a plant cultivar three chances before deciding it's the plant and not him.

I believe he was talking about the variegated Polemonium 'Brise d'Anjou', which was very popular when it was released, but didn't seem to be well-suited to the climate and/or soil conditions of the mid-Atlantic.

I don't have that great of an attention span. For me it's pretty much "here's your chance, make the most of it."

I had to laugh over the line "....not a contract with God", too, as I probably have some of the most expensive compost in the area. I've lived in the same house for 30 years, and have used my gardens as inspiration for my art quilts. However, each type of plant does have a very definite opinion re: what requirements it needs, hence the plant composition experiments that get composted. Still, the thrill of anticipation waiting for each mini-season makes perennial gardening great, good fun!

I love the comment on the life of perennials - is a lifestyle, not a contract with God! I laughed out loud (but then again it's late and I might just be overtired...). Loved the article. Thanks
